Syllabus for <Oral physiology >
Course Code:140092 Credit: 1.0 Total hours: 17
Instructor: Zhang Lei
1. Characteristics and Objectives
Oral physiology is a branch of physiology which is related to clinical manifestations in the normal and abnormal behavior of oral structures. These theory is the important basic course to study other oral medical courses, which also relation to clinic.
2. Basic Requirements
During the course, the syllabus is finished by teaching, observing, practicing, self-studying, and examining. It is requested that theory bind experiment, basic relate to clinic, and cultivate the ability of analysis and solving problems.
3. Basic Content
The teaching plan is according to the 6th edition of <Oral anatomy and physiology>, which is published by The Peoples’ Health Press.
Section 1 Dentition
Students must be familiar with the inclined rules of each tooth in dentition. You have to know features in occlusal surface. Understand its dentoforms and size.
Section 2 Intercuspal occlusion
Students have to know the concept and contact features of intercuspal occlusion. Grasp the building of each occlusion. Understand facial marks and co-ordinations.
Section 3 Occlusion position
Students have to know the concept, signs and relations of intercuspal position, retruded contact position and mandibular postural position. Understand contact features in anter-post occlusion and lateral occlusion. Understand the concept of normal occlusion.
Section 4 Mandibular movement
Students must grasp the factor which control mandibular movement, and Students must know the limit of mandibular movement. Students should know the nervous controlling of mandibular movement.
Section 5 Mastication
Students should understand which nerve control mastication. You must know the course of mastication and its characteristic of movement. Students should know the expression of electromyography in mandibular movement. Students have to grasp the concept of mastication strength and articulator strength. Students must also grasp the concept of mastication efficiency and its method of measure and the factor that influence mastication efficiency. Students must grasp the concept of attrition and abrasion and its physiology significance. Students should know the function of tongue, lips, cheeks, and palate in mastication. Students must know the influence be caused by mastication to development of occlusion, maxilla, mandible, and face.
Section 6 Swallowing
Students must know the influence be caused by swallowing to development of occlusion, maxilla, mandible, and face. Students should understand the course of swallowing.
Section 7 Speeches
Students should understand the concept of speech and its controlling nerves. Students must know the influence to speech be caused by oral structure.
Section 8 Saliva functions
Students must be familiar with nature and composition of saliva. Understand its secretary mechanism and grasp its regulation to body.
Section 9 Sensation
Students have to know the conduction mechanism and effect factors of gustation and pain sensation. Understand the mechanism of tactual sensation, pressure sensation and thermal sensation.
4. Experiment or Computer Operation
Gustation test
6. Oral Physiology Symposium: oral presentation by the students, scored by the judges.
7. Preparatory Course Requirement
Students must successfully finish studying some basic medical courses, such as 《Human anatomy》、《Physiology》and so on.
